ByteAnza was founded in late 2022 by three friends—Brian (Astrophysicist), Davis (Computer Engineer), and Joshua (Agricultural Engineer). We’ve known each other since we were teenagers, and ByteAnza is the culmination of our friendship and shared dreams. The name “ByteAnza” merges "Byte," the digital data unit, and "Anza," meaning beginning, symbolizing a fresh start in technological empowerment.Our journey began with an autonomous food-growing system that won the 2023 Kenya National Bureau of Statistics hackathon and secured us a place in the top 10 at the AYUTE Kenya Challenge. This success inspired our next initiative, The_Bytelab, launched in 2023. Our goal? To empower kids to explore the world of STEM at a young age, fostering their curiosity and creativity.
At ByteLab, we strongly believe in hands-on, experiential learning—that real understanding comes from doing. In today’s tech-driven world, it is crucial for children and teens to be equipped with the skills needed to navigate the future.Research consistently shows that STEM education plays a key role in developing critical thinking and problem-solving abilities. However, in Kenya, only 34.8% of households own a computer (Source: KNBS, 2019 Kenya Population and Housing Census), limiting access to essential tools and knowledge needed for the 21st century.Additionally, only 44% of Kenyans have internet access, with a significant disparity between urban and rural areas (Source: KNBS, Mbata, P. A., 2022). This digital divide, coupled with a gender gap in STEM fields (Source: López-Iñesta, E., et al., 2020), underscores the urgency of initiatives like ByteLab. By providing access to critical resources and fostering a love for STEM, we aim to bridge these gaps and unlock the full potential of Kenya’s youth.
